Uganda: UEDCL Urges Customers to Buy Power Units Early Ahead of Elections

13 January 2026

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has advised customers on prepaid meters to purchase electricity units in advance to avoid potential disruptions during the upcoming election period.

In a customer notice issued this week, UEDCL said the platforms used to buy prepaid electricity units are internet-based and may experience instability immediately before, during and after polling days.

"To ensure you enjoy uninterrupted power during the upcoming elections period, we kindly encourage you to recharge your prepaid meters in advance," the notice reads.

The power distributor said it cannot guarantee the continuous availability of electricity unit purchase systems during the election period due to possible internet interruptions, urging customers to buy sufficient units ahead of time.

UEDCL outlined several payment options available for purchasing power units, including MTN Mobile Money by dialing 1654#, Airtel Money through *185# option 4, as well as Payway and Interswitch platforms.

The company also encouraged customers to seek help through its toll-free customer care lines in case they encounter any challenges while purchasing units.

Uganda is expected to go to the polls later this month, with authorities warning that increased demand on digital infrastructure could affect some online services.
