The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has conducted a major operation targeting illegal sand mining in Nakonge, Katosi Town Council, Mukono District.

During the crackdown, authorities seized heavy-duty vehicles, sand-mining boats, and other equipment used in unauthorized sand extraction.

The operation, carried out in collaboration with other government agencies, comes amid growing concerns over environmental degradation caused by unlawful sand mining.

Emmanuel Busobozi, Principal Environment Officer for Water and Wetland Resources at NEMA, said the operation uncovered more than six machines operating illegally across 25 acres.

"Some of these miners were operating under the assumption that political connections would shield them from law enforcement," Busobozi explained.

He emphasized that NEMA is committed to protecting the environment and ensuring that all sand-mining activities are conducted legally.

"We want to send a clear message: anyone found engaging in illegal sand mining will face the full force of the law," he warned.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible. All confiscated equipment has been taken to NEMA offices for further examination and possible legal action.

The operation forms part of NEMA's broader efforts to regulate natural resource extraction and safeguard Uganda's wetlands from environmental harm.
