Uganda: NRM Sweeps Kabale Parliamentary Seats in Historic Victory

20 January 2026

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has registered a historic political victory in Kabale District after winning all declared parliamentary seats, eliminating opposition representation in the area.

Kabale District comprises Ndorwa East, Ndorwa West, Kabale Municipality, and the District Woman Member of Parliament seat, all of which have now been taken by NRM candidates.

In Ndorwa East, long-serving opposition legislator Wilfred Niwagaba was defeated after polling 16,810 votes.

He lost to NRM's Protazio Begumisa, who secured 17,662 votes.

Ndorwa West also shifted political allegiance after more than two decades of opposition representation.

Former State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives David Bahati, who contested as an independent following NRM party primaries, was defeated by NRM's Eliab Naturinda Mporera. Mporera garnered 22,601 votes against Bahati's 17,282.

In Kabale Municipality, NRM candidate Andrew Aja Baryayanga won the parliamentary seat after polling 7,973 votes, narrowly beating People's Front for Freedom candidate Dr Nicholas Kamara, who received 7,313 votes.

The District Woman Member of Parliament race was won by NRM's Enid Origumisiriza, who secured 46,797 votes to defeat incumbent Catheline Ndamira, who polled 40,722 votes.

For the first time in history, Kabale District will be represented in Parliament entirely by NRM legislators, a development that underscores the ruling party's growing dominance in the region and represents a significant setback for opposition political forces.
