Uganda: Two-Horse Race As Voters Set to Choose Adjumani District Chairperson

21 January 2026

At least 99,000 registered voters across nine sub-counties and two town councils in Adjumani District are expected to cast their ballots tomorrow in the highly anticipated Local Council Five (LC V) Chairperson election.

The contest has effectively narrowed to a two-horse race between the incumbent chairperson, Ben Anyama, who is seeking re-election as an independent candidate, and John Anyanzo Ambayo, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer.

The campaign period has been marked by allegations of voter bribery and sporadic electoral violence, including incidents of property destruction, arrests, and injuries that required hospitalization.

In response to the rising tension, security has been tightened across the district, with joint patrols deployed at key locations to deter clashes between supporters of rival candidates.

Authorities have urged voters and political actors to remain calm, exercise restraint, and participate peacefully in the electoral process.

The North West Nile Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Collins Asea, has on several occasions warned against electoral violence, calling on residents to observe the law and maintain peace.

Police say several suspects linked to electoral violence, arson, causing bodily harm, and destruction of property have already been arrested, charged, and appeared before courts of law in recent months.

Adjumani District, located on the southern bank of the White Nile in north-western Uganda, was originally known as East Moyo and was created on May 17, 1997, following the division of the former Moyo District.
