Uganda: NRM Pakwach Flagbearer Alleges Irregularities in Jonam County Polls

Pakwach--The National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary flag bearer for Jonam County, Epiphany Berocan, has raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the 2026 parliamentary election in Pakwach District, while commending the overall security and peaceful nature of the general polls.

In a press statement following the elections, Berocan thanked President Yoweri Museveni for a calm and secure electoral process nationwide and congratulated him on securing a renewed mandate.

He highlighted a significant rise in support for the NRM presidential candidate in Pakwach District, noting that the party's vote share increased from 61 percent in 2021 to 72.14 percent in 2026, reflecting growing public confidence in the ruling party.

However, Berocan said the parliamentary contest in Jonam County was marred by multiple electoral malpractices.

He alleged illegal campaigning on polling day, claiming that no corrective action was taken by election officials despite reported violations.

He further cited the denial of access to duly appointed polling agents at several polling stations, interference with biometric voter verification (BVV/ BVVS) machines in Alwi Sub-county, and the arrest, intimidation, and harassment of polling agents.

Concerns were also raised about the tallying process at the results centre, which Berocan described as delayed and irregular, casting doubt on the transparency of the final outcome.

"I call upon the Chairman of the Electoral Commission to take corrective action and restore the integrity and credibility of the electoral process," he said.

Beyond the elections, Berocan appealed to President Museveni to establish a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the longstanding Jonam (Palango) land matter on the eastern bank of the River Nile, which he said continues to affect local communities.

Berocan confirmed that his legal team is pursuing all available constitutional and legal avenues to address the electoral concerns and urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding.

"My commitment is to justice, peace, and the voice of the people of Jonam," he said.
