Uganda: Kahindo Retains Kasese Municipality Mayoral Seat in Tight Race

Incumbent Kasese Municipality Mayor Chance Kahindo Sibyavugha has retained his seat after emerging winner in a closely watched four-candidate race, according to official results released by the Electoral Commission.

Results from the Return Form for Transmission of Results for the 2026 Local Government Council Elections show that Kahindo, running on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket, garnered 14,893 votes.

He defeated National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Jolly Masika Kateeba, who polled 4,638 votes. Muhindo Saidi Kisuki of the People's Front for Freedom (PFF) received 235 votes, while National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Jackline Bwenge polled 145 votes.

A total of 19,911 valid votes were cast in the election. The tally also included 407 rejected ballots and 58 spoiled ballot papers, bringing the total number of ballot papers counted to 20,318.

The results were officially declared by Kasese District Returning Officer Godfrey Mbabazi at Rukoki Multipurpose Hall on January 27, 2026.

Kahindo's victory comes as a rare consolation for the opposition in Kasese District, which has in recent elections seen several key political positions swing to the ruling NRM.

The mayoral win allows the opposition to maintain a foothold in a district long regarded as an opposition stronghold but one that has recently experienced notable political shifts.

Speaking shortly after being declared winner, Kahindo thanked residents for renewing their confidence in his leadership and pledged to prioritise development.

"I am grateful to the people of Kasese for standing with me once again. My focus remains town beautification, improved service delivery, and ensuring Kasese becomes one of the best towns in this country," Kahindo said.

He added that his new term would build on gains made during his previous tenure, with emphasis on urban infrastructure, cleanliness, and economic growth.

Kahindo's re-election underscores the continued appeal of opposition leadership at the municipal level, even as the broader political balance in Kasese District increasingly tilts toward the ruling party.
