Nairobi — The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) will Thursday energize the 132kV Sondu-Homa Bay Transmission Line, marking the completion of a key power infrastructure project whose final construction phase lasted about seven months.
KETRACO said the new line will stabilize electricity supply in Homa Bay County and the wider South Nyanza region, reducing outages, improving voltage quality, and providing an alternative route to strengthen overall grid reliability.
"This milestone will unlock economic growth, support industry, enhance service delivery, and improve the quality of life for households and businesses across the Lake Region," the company said.
The project seeks to address long-standing power challenges, where fluctuating supply has affected businesses, public institutions, and domestic consumers.

The development follows KETRACO's energization of the 400/220kV Mariakani Substation on December 23, 2025, a major boost to electricity reliability in Kenya's Coastal region.
Modernisation push
The substation now serves as a critical gateway linking the Coast to Nairobi and the national transmission grid.
The Mariakani facility reinforces the Nairobi-Mombasa Transmission Line, designed to carry more than 1,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity between the two regions, easing pressure on the Coast's power network and ending years of instability that forced reliance on costly diesel generators.
KETRACO Acting Managing Director Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias said the project would enable cleaner and more reliable power to flow to the region.
"With this development, the Coast will significantly reduce its reliance on expensive and polluting diesel power, especially during peak evening hours. Cleaner, reliable, and stable energy will now flow more efficiently, lowering costs and stabilizing supply," he said.
The Mariakani Substation forms part of the second phase of the Mombasa-Nairobi Transmission Line Project and plays a strategic role in reinforcing Kenya's national grid and the wider regional interconnected power system.
KETRACO is mandated to plan, design, construct, own, operate, and maintain Kenya's high-voltage electricity transmission grid and regional power interconnectors.
