Uganda, France Reaffirm Commitment to Sustainable Energy Partnership

The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has hosted the new French Ambassador to Uganda, Virginie Leroy, reaffirming the long-standing partnership between France and Uganda in advancing sustainable energy development.

The engagement, led by UEGCL Chief Executive Officer Harrison Mutikanga, focused on delivering the UEGCL Strategic Plan 2025-2030, with emphasis on strengthening generation capacity and improving the reliability of the national grid.

"We view this partnership as strategic and transformative, and we look forward to the effective implementation and tangible improvements to the national grid," Eng Mutikanga said, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation.

Key areas of discussion included the expansion of renewable energy, particularly solar and geothermal power, climate and insurance financing mechanisms, and the ongoing Nalubaale-Kiira rehabilitation programme.

The meeting also highlighted the implementation of financial sustainability recommendations, digitalisation initiatives, and continuous capacity building within the energy sector.

France remains a significant partner in Uganda's energy development, supporting initiatives such as the Stanbic Green Tech Accelerator programme, which promotes innovation among Ugandan youth and women in green economy sectors, including renewable energy.

The partnership aligns with Uganda's Vision 2040 and the Green Growth Development Strategy, both of which aim to expand access to electricity, enhance energy security, and promote environmentally sustainable power generation.
