Uganda: Katikkiro Launches 'Situla Omutindo' to Expand Coffee and Livelihood Campaign in Buganda

10 February 2026

The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has unveiled a new initiative, "Situla Omutindo" (Raise the Standards), aimed at building on the decade-long success of the kingdom's "Ommwanyi Terimba" campaign.

The Ommwanyi Terimba program, implemented over the past ten years, has helped many people in Buganda improve the quality of their coffee and increase household incomes, contributing to poverty reduction and improved livelihoods.

However, the Katikkiro said it was time to broaden the scope of the campaign.

"The time has come for the 'Ommwanyi Terimba' initiative to be expanded and integrated with other areas that will help our people further transform their livelihoods," he said.

The new Situla Omutindo program will focus on six key areas: Coffee and Agriculture, Trade and Business, Health, Education, Family Welfare, and Talent Development.

To promote the initiative, the Katikkiro announced that the kingdom will conduct tours across Buganda, encouraging public participation.

"We are going to move across Buganda to promote these themes, and I call upon every Muganda to take up at least one area, work on it professionally, and maintain high standards," Katikkiro Mayiga said.

The program was officially launched at the home of Wasswa Silver, a coffee and food farmer in Bukwaya Village, Buvuma Islands.

Local residents welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it would improve livelihoods in the islands and across Buganda.
