Uganda: Museveni Urges Unity, Development At 49th Janani Luwum Commemoration

President Museveni has called for peace, unity, and people-centered leadership as Uganda marked the 49th commemoration of Archbishop Janani Jakaliya Luwum Day at St. Paul Church of Uganda in Mucwini Sub-county, Kitgum District on Monday.

The event, held under the theme "Anchored in Christ for Unity, Stability and Peace," brought together religious leaders, government officials, and pilgrims from across the country to honour Luwum, the third Archbishop of the Church of Uganda and a martyr of faith and justice.

In his address, Museveni reflected on Uganda's turbulent history under former President Idi Amin, condemning leadership by coercion and emphasizing governance through persuasion and service delivery.

"Leadership must be through persuasion and good works, not intimidation," he said.

The President commended the people of Northern Uganda for their support in recent elections, citing government initiatives such as electrification, health center upgrades, and improved roads as evidence of reciprocal development.

He also revealed plans to construct a modern memorial center to honor Archbishop Luwum and stimulate socio-economic growth in the region.

Addressing regional security, Museveni expressed concern over persistent cattle rustling in Acholi sub-region and pledged to intervene.

He also confirmed that financial pledges to local religious leaders, including Shs60 million allocations, have been fulfilled, highlighting ongoing partnerships with faith-based institutions.

Archbishop Luwum, who was arrested on February 16, 1977, for speaking against human rights abuses, is widely recognized as a symbol of moral courage.

Despite official reports claiming he died in a car crash, historical accounts confirm he was executed on Amin's orders.

A statue in his honor stands at Westminster Abbey, and in 2015, Uganda declared February 16 a public holiday to commemorate his sacrifice.

Annual nationwide events include prayers, pilgrimages to Mucwini, and community gatherings celebrating Luwum's life, courage, and enduring legacy.
