The Namibia Youth Energy Forum (NYEF) says local ownership should be seen as a strength for Namibia's economy.

The youth-led body focused on the energy sector says it supports inclusive participation, sustainable development and economic transformation in the country's growing oil, gas and green hydrogen industries.

Forum director Fanuel Shinedima says young Namibians should not be excluded from opportunities in the sector.

"We believe local ownership is not a threat. It is an opportunity for Namibia to build capacity, create jobs and retain value within our borders. Young people must participate fully in the energy sector," he says.

The forum says it supports Nasan Energies' acquisition of 52 service stations in Namibia, describing it as a step towards increasing Namibian participation in the downstream fuel industry.

"We strongly support Nasan, because it is a 100% youth-owned, Namibian company.

This is exactly the type of local participation we advocate for: bold, capable and forward looking," Shinedima says.

He says the forum has launched programmes aimed at supporting young professionals and youth-led businesses in the energy value chain through training and enterprise support.

The aim is for young Namibians to be employed in the sector and also to participate as owners and decision-makers.

"Economic transformation will only be meaningful if it includes the youth. Local companies should not be viewed with suspicion. They should be supported to grow, compete and contribute to national development," he says.

The forum says it believes stronger local ownership promotes accountability and keeps economic benefits in the country.

It says its support of Nasan's acquisition is part of a wider push for youth participation in Namibia's energy sector.
