Uganda: KCCA Launches Investigation After Unauthorised Demolition At Owino Market

Authorities from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) have launched investigations after structures at St Balikuddembe Market, also known as Owino Market, were demolished without authorisation.

KCCA spokesperson Daniel Nuwabiine confirmed that the demolition occurred on Saturday without the required permits from the city authority.

He added that arrests had already been made as part of efforts to identify those responsible.

"Allow the legal and investigation process to take place. KCCA is on the ground and arrests have been made since Saturday when the demolition at Owino Market occurred," Nuwabiine said.

He further stated that KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki responded swiftly, arriving at the scene within 45 minutes to assess the situation.

"The ED Sharifah Buzeki was on the ground in 45 minutes. The people demolished the market without a permit. We now wait for the investigations to see the findings," Nuwabiine explained.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the demolition and to hold those responsible accountable.

KCCA has urged the public, traders, and stakeholders to remain calm as the legal process continues.

Owino Market is one of Kampala's busiest commercial hubs, hosting thousands of traders and shoppers daily.

Officials emphasized that protecting such vital business centres requires adherence to proper procedures and city regulations.

Police have said further updates will be provided once investigations are concluded.
