Uganda: Three Killed in Kaabong Mining Tunnel Collapse

23 March 2026

Three people have died following a mining accident in Sokodu Village in Kaabong after a tunnel collapsed and buried them underground.

The deceased have been identified as Lopetok Modo, Chills Loknoi and Nauru Nangiro. Police said the victims were inside a mining tunnel when the soil suddenly gave way, trapping them.

One other person sustained injuries in the incident and has since been transferred to Kaabong Hospital for treatment.

Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the incident, saying security teams responded promptly and secured the scene.

"The bodies of the victims were later retrieved from underground using a bulldozer," Longole said.

Police have urged local leaders and communities to regulate mining activities and increase awareness on safety measures to prevent similar accidents. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
