Shock and concern have gripped residents of Kazo Central Zone 1 in Nansana Municipality after a suspected thief was brutally lynched and set on fire by a mob.

According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect was part of a group of five people who allegedly raided a home and made off with poultry during the night.

"The homeowner raised an alarm, and residents responded quickly. They managed to arrest one of the suspects," an eyewitness said. "Unfortunately, the situation got out of hand, and he was beaten before being set on fire."

Residents say the area has recently experienced a surge in theft cases, which they attribute to criminal groups believed to be operating from nearby areas such as Kazo Angola and Bwaise.

"We are living in fear," one resident said. "These people come at night, steal from us, and disappear. We are tired of the insecurity."

Local leaders, including Meddie Mugerwa, condemned the act of mob justice but acknowledged growing frustration among residents.

"Mob justice is not the solution and should not be tolerated," Mugerwa said.

"However, there is increasing concern over rising crime. Residents feel discouraged when suspects are arrested but later released."

The area security officer, Lydia Nakonde, also denounced the incident, urging the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course.

"What happened is unlawful and unacceptable," Nakonde said. "We understand the concerns about crime, but justice must be left to the police and the courts."

Police from Kawempe police division responded to the scene, retrieved the body, and transported it to Mulago City Mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.

Police officers from Kawempe police division urged residents to report suspected criminals through proper legal channels instead of resorting to violence.
