The government has launched the second phase of its resettlement and cash transfer programme targeting households at risk of landslides in Kween District, as part of ongoing efforts to mitigate disasters in the Elgon sub-region.

Speaking at the launch, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said the programme will support vulnerable families with financial assistance and land in safer areas.

"Under this programme, each household, identified to be at risk of landslides in this subregion, will receive 10 million shillings and 2 acres of land in a safer location," she said.

Nabbanja said the government has adopted a new approach of relocating all affected households to a single area to improve service delivery.

"Unlike previous arrangements, we are relocating all households to one location. This approach will enable the government to provide essential services such as schools, health facilities, water, and roads in a centralised area," she said.

She added that the move will also free up land in high-risk zones for productive activities such as agriculture.

The Prime Minister credited President Yoweri Museveni for supporting the initiative and called on partners to continue working with government agencies to ensure the success of the resettlement programme.
