Uganda: NRM's Kabuye Challenges Nup's Lukanga Victory in Njeru

The political contest for Njeru Municipality has taken a legal turn after National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Badru Kabuye Mpoza filed a petition at the High Court in Lugazi seeking to overturn the election of National Unity Platform (NUP)'s Moses Musanje Lukanga.

Kabuye is challenging the outcome of the January 15, 2026 parliamentary elections, claiming that Lukanga was falsely declared the winner by the returning officer and seeking nullification of the results.

In his petition, Kabuye alleges widespread election irregularities, including vote rigging, intimidation, and violence against his agents at multiple polling stations.

"It is true I am challenging the election of Lukanga because I was cheated of my victory. I am seeking transparency because there were many irregularities in the January 15, 2026 general elections," Kabuye stated.

Official results declared Lukanga the winner with 18,665 votes, while Kabuye polled 13,003 votes. Other candidates included Richard Muyombya (FDC) with 573 votes, Hassan Muwanga Njaka (Independent) with 719 votes, Robert Musoke Subulime (Independent) with 1,196 votes, Caesar Kalema (Independent) with 2,472 votes, and Lwanga Jimmy (Independent) with 1,201 votes.

Kabuye contends that the official declaration did not reflect the will of the voters and expressed surprise at the final outcome. Represented by Strand Advocates and Alma Advocates, he is requesting the court to nullify Lukanga's election and declare him the duly elected Member of Parliament for Njeru Municipality.

The case sets the stage for a legal battle that could determine the legitimacy of the Njeru Municipality parliamentary seat. The High Court is expected to examine evidence on the conduct of the election, alleged malpractice, and compliance with electoral laws.

This petition adds to the growing number of post-election disputes following the 2026 general elections, reflecting ongoing concerns over electoral transparency and accountability in Uganda's political landscape.
