Uganda: Kampala Police Arrest 10 Suspects in Major Panga Robbery Crackdown

Police in Katwe Division have successfully dismantled a notorious panga-wielding robbery gang that has been terrorising several areas within Kampala, including Makindye, Kizungu (Salaama), Bunga, and Katwe.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigire, the breakthrough followed a series of intelligence-led operations targeting organised criminal activity in the affected communities.

On April 5, 2026, police officers acting on credible intelligence arrested a suspect identified as Olwo, also known as Tom, along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division. He was apprehended while riding a motorcycle, registration number UMA 979 HA (Haojue, maroon). During interrogation, the suspect confessed to being part of an organised gang involved in violent robberies, often using pangas and motorcycles to execute their attacks and facilitate quick escapes.

Following this development, a coordinated operation was conducted in the early hours of 8th April 2026 at approximately 5:00 a.m. in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish, Makindye Division. The operation led to the arrest of nine additional suspects, including Latif Bogere, also known as Musoga, and Ivan Turyahirwa, also known as Musiramu.

Police also impounded four motorcycles believed to have been used in carrying out the criminal activities. Preliminary findings indicate that some of the motorcycles may have been stolen.

Investigations further revealed that the gang had been operating for a considerable period, targeting individuals for money and electronic devices.

The suspects admitted to multiple robberies, including the theft of Shs 350,000 from a motor vehicle in Kizungu Zone, Salaama Parish, as well as several mobile phone snatching incidents along Salaama Road. One suspected stolen mobile phone has since been recovered.

"All suspects are currently in custody and will be arraigned in court upon completion of investigations," Owoyesigire said.

Police have reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety and security of the public.
