Uganda: Police Dismantle Suspected Gang Behind Soroti Mobile Money Robbery, Murder

Police in the East Kyoga Region have arrested 11 suspects in connection with an aggravated robbery and fatal shooting that claimed the life of Patricia Kokunda, a 36-year-old mobile money operator in Soroti City.

According to Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the arrests stem from intelligence-led operations conducted across Soroti, Amuria, Kalaki, and Abim districts. The number of suspects has since increased from an initial four to 11 following sustained investigations.

Among those arrested is Simon Epeu, also known as Iboda, who is suspected of pulling the victim out of her vehicle during the attack. David Emenyu, also known as Sam Ogwang or Olipong, is believed to have been the shooter. Emmanuel Okello, alias Imorning, is identified as one of the main planners, while Rashid Eyamu, also known as Odekuro, is alleged to have initiated the robbery plan.

Investigators have also arrested Alfred Elacu, suspected of supplying ammunition used in the crime, alongside his wife Hellen Akello. Other suspects in custody include Alex Okello, Jorem Ojele alias Jogo, Julius Elwanu, Felix Onebo, and Salume Akello, who is identified as the wife of the alleged shooter.

Police have recovered key exhibits believed to have been used in the attack, including a rifle suspected to have been used in the shooting, ammunition, clothing worn during the operation, a red motorcycle without a number plate, and a Tecno Canon mobile phone belonging to the deceased.

Authorities also confirmed the recovery of Shs10.5 million out of the estimated Shs28 million stolen during the robbery.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Good Friday, April 3, 2026, at around 4:40 a.m. near Goalman Supermarket along Station Road in Soroti City. Police say the assailants attacked the victim, fatally shot her, and fled with her handbag containing cash and other valuables.

Rusoke said the arrests mark a significant breakthrough in dismantling what appears to be an organised criminal network.

"Our intelligence-led operations have yielded substantial progress, and we remain committed to ensuring that all individuals involved in this heinous crime are brought to justice," he said.

Investigations are ongoing to trace additional suspects and establish the full extent of the network behind the robbery. Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any credible information to the nearest police station.
