Regional integration and governance reform have taken centre stage at the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) Leaders' Retreat at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, with senior political leaders and invited guests calling for urgent and coordinated action to position Africa more competitively in an evolving global order.
President Museveni, who is attending the retreat alongside senior party and government officials, reiterated the importance of continental unity and economic cooperation.
His remarks echoed earlier positions in which he emphasised that Africa's transformation depends on deeper integration, economic independence, and strategic self-reliance.
A key highlight of the retreat was a presentation by Hassan Omar Hassan, Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), who described regional integration as an urgent strategic necessity.

He warned that Africa must move decisively to adapt to the emerging multipolar global order, arguing that fragmented markets and policy inconsistencies continue to undermine the continent's competitiveness.
Senator Omar called for strengthened intra-African trade, harmonised regulatory frameworks, and increased investment in critical infrastructure, noting that these pillars are essential for unlocking sustainable growth and shared prosperity across the continent.
He further urged political leaders to take a more proactive role in shaping legislation that supports integration, strengthens accountability systems, and prioritises citizen-centred development.
According to him, effective governance structures will be critical in translating regional ambitions into tangible benefits for ordinary Africans.
The retreat also featured contributions from the Head of Public Service, Lucy Nakyobe, who emphasised the need for improved government efficiency and intensified efforts in the fight against corruption.
She outlined a series of administrative and policy recommendations aimed at strengthening public sector performance and restoring public trust.
In remarks shared on social media, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa welcomed the proposals, expressing optimism that their implementation could significantly improve governance outcomes and contribute to a more secure and prosperous future for Uganda.
The NRM Leaders' Retreat continues to serve as a strategic platform for reflection, policy alignment, and long-term planning, as leaders seek to consolidate gains and chart a path toward both national development and broader regional transformation.
