Kenya: MPs Confirm Adequate Fuel Stocks After KPC Depot Visits

Nairobi — The National Assembly's Energy Committee has confirmed that the country has sufficient petroleum supplies following an inspection visit to the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) headquarters in Nairobi.

Committee Chair and Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria said fuel depots in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nairobi, Nakuru and Eldoret currently hold adequate stocks.

"So we are satisfied that the country has enough fuel stock," Gikaria said.

The confirmation comes after KPC Acting Managing Director Pius Mwendwa disclosed that the company is holding about 162.8 million litres of petrol--enough for over 20 days of consumption--alongside 169 million litres of diesel.

However, the committee flagged localized shortages in Kisii and Nyamira, despite the Kisumu depot maintaining sufficient reserves.

"So it is for us now to go and check with Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to understand whether marketers have actually gotten their fuel and taken it to those areas," Gikaria said.

He added that the committee will seek further clarification from KPC on how much of the current fuel stocks are allocated for domestic use versus exports to neighbouring countries such as Uganda.
