Leaders in Ibanda District have raised concern over a growing wave of car theft, calling for heightened security measures and greater public vigilance.

The matter was brought to the fore during a district council meeting held on Tuesday at the district headquarters, where officials expressed unease over the increasing incidents reported in recent days.

Speaking during the session, Ibanda District Speaker Godwin Muhumuza Oulanya revealed that at least three vehicles have been stolen within a span of just three days, including one belonging to the councillor representing persons with disabilities.

"This trend is very worrying," Oulanya told council. "We have lost three vehicles in only three days, including that of a councillor. It raises serious questions about the effectiveness of our night patrols by both police and UPDF."

He urged security agencies, under the leadership of the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), to step up night patrols, particularly during the early morning hours.

"I call upon the security team led by the RDC to intensify patrols, especially between midnight and 5:00am, which appears to be the most vulnerable time," he added.

Responding to the concerns, Ibanda Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Mbetegyereize acknowledged the reported incidents and assured leaders that security agencies are taking the matter seriously.

"We have received information regarding these thefts, and we are following up on the cases," Mbetegyereize said. "However, security begins with the individual. I urge members of the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as security teams continue to do their part."

Police in the district have since launched investigations aimed at identifying the suspects and recovering the stolen vehicles.

Authorities are now appealing to residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities that could help curb the rising crime.
