The head of the Mmamba clan, Omutaka Gabunga James Mubiru Zziikwa IV, the 38th Gabunga, has expressed concern over what he described as the growing disrespect of Buganda cultural traditions, especially practices connected to burial rites and clan identity.
He made the remarks at his residence in Kabowa, Lubaga Division, Kyaddondo, during a ceremony where he received a delegation linked to the Kiyaga lineage from Sanda in Busiro.
Omutaka Gabunga emphasized that cultural procedures must be strictly followed, particularly in matters of death and burial.

He warned against practices that go against established clan traditions, urging descendants to return to the proper cultural way of doing things.
"No grandchild is permitted allowed to conduct last funerals rites 'okwabya lumbe' before proper cultural procedures are observed," he said.
Omutaka Gabunga further encouraged members of the clan to reconnect with their roots by respecting Buganda customs, including traditional naming practices, saying this would help preserve the identity and continuity of the kingdom's heritage.
He also condemned individuals who misuse clan names, particularly those he accused of using clan identities to facilitate the illegal sale of clan land.
The Katikkiro of the Mmamba clan, Gerald Kaberenge, said Baganda should stop mismanaging ancestral land and instead strengthen accountability within their clans. He noted that many descendants had abandoned their responsibilities, which led to the introduction of an initiative called "Olutikkula," aimed at uniting all Gabunga descendants.
Omutaka of the Kiyaga lineage, Mubiru Saul Luyimbazi, reported that since his installation, some members of the lineage have taken legal action in attempts to take over ancestral land. He appealed to Omutaka Gabunga and other clan leaders to intervene and help protect clan property.
The Katikkiro of the Kiyaga lineage, Ssalongo Noah Kibuuka, said plans are underway to construct a house on the lineage's ancestral land in Sanda.
He called on the central clan leadership to support development efforts within the lineage.
