Uganda: Adra Uganda, UBA Bank Partner to Support Fruit Tree, Woodlot Planting in Lamwo

ADRA Uganda, in partnership with UBA Bank has launched an environmental and livelihood initiative in Palabek, Lamwo district.

This project aims to improve the well-being of both refugee and host communities while promoting sustainable environmental conservation through the planting of fruit trees and establishment of woodlots.

It targets the planting of 20,000 fruit trees and the creation of woodlots as part of a larger effort to plant 80,000 tree seedlings across Lamwo, Orom (Kitgum), and Karenga districts as part of ADRA STRENGTH project (2025-2027), which is focused on building resilience among vulnerable communities affected by climate change and conflict in the Acholi and Karamoja regions.

According to Aliguma Ahabyona Akiiki, the Project Manager for ADRA STRENGTH Project, the partnership aims to restore livelihoods for both refugee and host communities.

"This partnership with UBA Bank goes beyond planting trees -- it's about restoring hope and livelihoods for both refugees and host communities in Palabek. Initiatives like this provide a sustainable alternative, putting the power back into the hands of the community to feed their families and protect their environment for generations to come," Aliguma said.

Officials said refugees in the Palabek Refugee Settlement, together with members of the host community, have actively participated in planting the seedlings and this hands-on involvement fosters a sense of ownership, strengthens community cohesion, and empowers local populations.

The Commandant of the Palabek Refugee Settlement, Ms. Joyce Oyella and the Refugee Welfare Council chairperson ,John Pasquale, expressed deep appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing its vital role in supporting livelihoods amid funding cuts that have affected food supply assistance to vulnerable groups in Lamwo.

The event was also attended by local government officials, youth, refugees, and host community members.
