Uganda: North Kigezi Bishop Visits Besigye in Luzira, Marks His 70th Birthday

The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesimus Asiimwe, on Sunday conducted a pastoral visit to veteran opposition leader and four-time presidential candidate, Col (Rtd) Dr. Kizza Besigye, at Luzira Maximum Security Prison.

Speaking during an interview with The Nile Post shortly after the visit, Bishop Asiimwe raised concern over Besigye's continued detention without trial, noting that, with nearly 18 months in jail without conclusion of his case, the principles of justice have been undermined.

"He should either be convicted or acquitted. Being incarcerated for nearly one and a half years without trial is justice delayed, which is tantamount to justice denied," he said.

Responding to criticism, Bishop Asiimwe argued that he is a pastor for all, regardless of political affiliation, adding that his continued visits to Besigye, now totaling three, are rooted in his responsibility to members of the North Kigezi Diocese.

Quoting Hebrews 13:3, he said: "Remember the Lord's people who are in jail and be concerned for them. Don't forget those who are suffering, but imagine you are there with them," and called for God's intervention so that truth and justice prevail in the case of Besigye and other detainees.

Bishop Asiimwe added that the visit also involved joining Besigye in prayer and thanksgiving to mark his 70th birthday, which he celebrated on April 22.
