Uganda: Police Investigate After Four-Year-Old Girl Is Found Dead in Mityana Garden

Police in Mityana Municipality have launched investigations into the death of a four-year-old girl whose body was discovered in a garden after she had been reported missing for two days.

The incident at Mizigo B Village in Busimbi Division has led to authorities holding the child's father and her step-mother to assist in ongoing inquiries.

The child, identified as Madrine Nabbiira, reportedly disappeared from her home, prompting alarm among family members and residents who immediately began searching for her across the area.

The search ended in tragedy when her body was found in a garden belonging to one of the residents in Mizigo B.

Local leaders said the discovery came after sustained community efforts involving residents and family members who had combed the area for two days.

"When we received news that the child was missing, we mobilized residents to search everywhere possible, but unfortunately she was only found after two days in a nearby garden," said village chairperson Richard Kizito.

Police said preliminary observations at the scene suggested the child may have suffered harm before her death. Investigators also reported that a police sniffer dog traced a scent path back to the child's home, prompting further inquiries.

"Early findings indicate that the child could have been subjected to mistreatment over time. The parents are currently in custody to help us establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident," said Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson.

Police have also begun efforts to trace the child's biological mother, who is said to have separated from the father earlier.

Residents described the incident as deeply disturbing and unusual for the area, saying it had created fear among parents regarding the safety of children.

"We are deeply worried because this kind of incident has never happened here before. It has raised fear among parents about the safety of their children," one resident said.

Authorities have urged parents and guardians to prioritise the safety and well-being of children, especially during school holidays when they spend more time at home.

"We encourage families to handle domestic matters responsibly and ensure that children are protected at all times," Kigozi added.

Police say investigations are ongoing, with statements already recorded from witnesses as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the child's death.
