Uganda: Prisons Service Promotes 336 Officers in South Western Region, Leaders Urge Professionalism

The Uganda Prisons Service has promoted 336 officers across the South Western Region, with leaders urging the newly elevated personnel to uphold discipline, professionalism, and commitment in their duties.

The Regional Prisons Commander for the South Western Region, Senior Superintendent of Prisons Walter Atuzo, congratulated the officers during a pipping and chevron ceremony held to officially recognize junior staff from Mbarara Main and Mbarara Women Prisons.

"Promotions are important because they motivate officers, improve morale, and recognize hard work and dedication. They also strengthen service delivery by placing experienced and capable officers in positions of greater responsibility," Atuzo said.

The promotion exercise reflected a broad distribution across stations in the region. Mbarara Main Prisons recorded the highest number with 45 officers promoted, followed by Bushenyi Main Prisons with 43. Kakiika registered 40 promotions, while Kiburara Farm accounted for 35, highlighting them as key centres in this cycle.

Most promotions were concentrated at the lower levels of the junior staff structure. Of the 336 officers promoted, 132 were elevated to the rank of Lance Corporal, while 103 advanced to Sergeant.

Fewer officers moved into higher ranks within the junior cadre. Eight officers were promoted to Principal Officer I, nine to Principal Officer II, six to Chief Warder Grade I, eleven to Chief Warder Grade II, and twenty-one to Chief Warder Grade III.

Atuzo emphasized that promotions come with greater responsibility, calling on officers to maintain integrity and adhere to the core values of the Uganda Prisons Service.

"Promotion is not just a reward--it is a call to higher standards of service, discipline, and accountability," he noted.

The ceremony was marked by a sense of pride as officers were formally adorned with their new ranks, symbolizing recognition of their service and dedication.

The promotion exercise is ongoing and will be extended to other stations across the country to ensure all promoted officers are duly recognized.
