Uganda: Police Hunt Driver After Fatal Hit-and-Run Kills Kabale Student

Police in Kabale are hunting for the driver of a Toyota Spacio, registration number UAX 316F, following a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old student along the Kabale-Katuna Road on May 14, 2026.

According to Elly Maate, the accident occurred at around 7:20 a.m. at Mwanjari in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.

The deceased has been identified as Mujurizi Oscar, a student at Kigezi High School and a resident of Igabiro Cell.

Police said the victim was riding a bicycle in the same direction as the vehicle from Kabale Town towards Katuna when the driver reportedly lost control and knocked him down. Mujurizi died on the spot.

Boda boda riders reportedly attempted to pursue the vehicle but failed to stop it. However, they managed to record the vehicle's registration number, which has aided police investigations.

"The scene was visited and documented, and the body was taken to Kabale Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination," Maate said.

Police attributed the crash to reckless driving and said investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from various locations within Kabale Municipality to help trace the vehicle and arrest the driver.
