NAIROBI — Technology distributor Mitsumi is investing $2 million (Sh 258 million) in an artificial intelligence (AI) cloud platform aimed at expanding access to computing infrastructure for young Kenyan developers and tech entrepreneurs, as demand for AI skills grows but access to high-end computing remains limited.

The initiative, targets university graduates, software developers and emerging startups seeking affordable access to AI tools and cloud computing resources needed to build and test digital solutions.

Mitsumi Distribution Co-founder and Managing Director Mitesh Shah said the project is largely driven by corporate social responsibility considerations.

"The AI cloud we are putting up is around $2 million. This is mostly CSR from Mitsumi's side so that most of our educated youths can utilize it for different things," Mitesh Shah explained.

The platform is expected to allow local innovators to develop software, experiment with AI applications and connect to global markets without the high costs associated with international cloud infrastructure.

However, access to infrastructure remains a key challenge in Kenya's digital economy, with many skilled youths unable to commercialize their ideas due to affordability constraints.

"So many youths are well educated to do something good, but because of cost and affordability, they are not getting good exposure," said Jagat Shah Chairman and CEO, Mitsumi Distribution.

Mitsumi says it has already hired more than 50 young professionals in its AI division working on research and product development.

The firm believes Kenya's talent base positions it to become a regional AI hub, provided infrastructure gaps continue to be addressed alongside emerging policy frameworks and regulation.
