Police in Mityana District have introduced stricter traffic enforcement measures following a fatal road crash that left two women dead and four others injured in Mityana Municipality, amid growing concern over alleged reckless driving by a group of young motorists locally referred to as "Abasayika."
The crash occurred in the early hours near Centenary Bank in Mityana Town and involved a Toyota Mark X registration number UBN 773L, reportedly driven by Ismail Kiwewa, who is alleged to be associated with the group.
The vehicle is said to have lost control before hitting pedestrians, killing two women, including Catherine Nakato, both of whom were vendors at Mityana Central Market.
Four other people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Mityana Regional Referral Hospital for treatment.

Residents described scenes of panic following the crash, saying the victims were going about their normal activities when the accident occurred. Community members also expressed concern that similar incidents involving reckless driving in the town have been recurring.
Local leaders and residents accused some members of the group of routinely driving high-end vehicles and motorcycles at excessive speeds through busy urban areas, allegedly disregarding traffic regulations and endangering pedestrians.
The Uganda Police Force confirmed that it has stepped up enforcement measures targeting reckless driving in response to the incident and previous complaints from residents.
Wamala regional police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said authorities have issued firm directives aimed at curbing dangerous road behaviour and preventing further loss of life.
"Road safety remains a priority. We have issued firm directives and will continue enforcing traffic regulations against anyone found driving recklessly or endangering the lives of other road users," he said.
He added that investigations into the crash are ongoing and that appropriate action will be taken once findings are concluded.
Residents in Mityana Municipality have called for stronger traffic enforcement measures, including speed control systems, improved road signage, and increased police patrols in high-risk areas.
Some community members also urged authorities to address what they described as growing indiscipline on the roads, particularly among young drivers operating within urban centres.
The fatal crash has intensified debate over road safety in Mityana District, with residents and leaders calling for sustained interventions to prevent similar tragedies.
