Uganda: Fire Destroys Students' Property At Ngora School As Police Probe Cause

Police in Ngora District are investigating a fire outbreak that occurred on the morning of May 31, 2026, at Mukura Union Vision Primary and Secondary School in Mukura Town Council.

According to Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, Mukura Police Station received information about the incident at around 9:00am, prompting an immediate response by Fire Prevention and Rescue Services personnel.

"Officers from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services promptly responded to the scene and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to other sections of the school," Rusoke said.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated in one of the students' hostel rooms while learners were attending morning prayers. The timing of the incident helped avert injuries or loss of life.

However, property belonging to students in the affected room was destroyed.

Initial findings suggest the fire may have been caused by a mobile phone that had been left charging on a defective or loose electrical socket.

"Investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the outbreak," Rusoke added.

Following the incident, the Uganda Police Force reminded school administrators, staff and students of the importance of observing fire safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in educational institutions.

Police advised schools to conduct regular inspections and maintenance of electrical installations, prohibit unauthorised charging of electronic devices in dormitories and hostels, and ensure that adequate fire suppression equipment, including fire extinguishers, is installed and properly maintained.

The force also urged schools to conduct regular fire drills and emergency response exercises, strengthen supervision of students in boarding facilities, and engage Fire Prevention and Rescue Services officers to conduct safety audits and provide professional guidance on fire prevention.

The Uganda Police Force reiterated its commitment to promoting safety in schools and called on education institutions to prioritise fire prevention and emergency preparedness as part of their daily operations.
