Kenya: Sinyalu MP Faces Bankruptcy Petition Over Unpaid Debt

Nairobi — Sinyalu Member of Parliament Fred Ikana is facing bankruptcy proceedings at the High Court after a creditor moved to have him declared bankrupt over an alleged unpaid debt.

Court documents show that a bankruptcy petition has been filed at the High Court's Commercial and Tax Division in Nairobi under Insolvency Cause No. E032 of 2025.

According to a public notice issued in the matter, the petition is scheduled for hearing on July 22, 2026, at the Milimani Law Courts.

"The said Petition is directed to be heard before the High Court of Kenya sitting at Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi at 9.00 a.m. on the 22nd July 2026 and any creditor(s)... desirous to support or oppose the making of an order on the said Petition, may appear at the time of the hearing in person, or by his advocate," the notice states.

Under Article 99(2)(f) of the Constitution of Kenya, a person is disqualified from being a Member of Parliament if they are an undischarged bankrupt.

The bankruptcy proceedings will now be determined by the High Court, which will consider whether the legal threshold for declaring the MP bankrupt has been met.
