Uganda: Nile Excellence Awards Open 2026 Nominations, Launch Innovation Fund for Young Changemakers

The Nile Excellence Annual Awards (NEAA) has launched its second edition for 2026 and unveiled the Nile Excellence Innovation Fund, a new initiative designed to support Uganda's innovators, entrepreneurs and community leaders in turning ideas into impactful projects.

The organising committee has also opened the online expression of interest for nominations, inviting individuals, organisations and institutions to nominate outstanding Ugandans whose work is making a meaningful difference in their communities.

"Individuals, organisations and institutions are invited to submit nominations for outstanding Ugandans contributing to innovation, entrepreneurship, culture, tourism, community development and national transformation," the committee said in a statement.

The 2026 edition aims to support more than 200 young innovators, businesses and community initiatives through increased visibility, strategic partnerships, mentorship and resource mobilisation.

Unlike conventional awards programmes that focus primarily on recognition, the NEAA says its flagship initiative is anchored on the Nile Excellence Innovation Fund, which seeks to identify, profile and support innovative projects with the potential to create employment, improve livelihoods and contribute to Uganda's socio-economic development.

"Unlike traditional awards that mainly focus on recognition, the Nile Excellence Annual Awards seeks to convert excellence into opportunity through the Nile Excellence Innovation Fund - an initiative designed to identify, profile and support innovative projects with potential to create employment, improve livelihoods and contribute to Uganda's development," the statement said.

Speaking during the unveiling of the second edition and the innovation fund, organising committee chairman Samuel Mwesiiga said Uganda has abundant talent that requires the right platforms to flourish.

"Uganda is blessed with talented young people, entrepreneurs and innovators who have the ability to develop solutions to many of our challenges. Our responsibility is to identify, recognise and connect these innovators to opportunities that can help their ideas grow into impactful projects," Mwesiiga said.

The awards are built around three strategic pillars--innovation, culture and tourism--which organisers say are critical to Uganda's economic growth, national identity and global competitiveness.

Under the innovation pillar, the programme will recognise technology innovators, startups, agribusinesses, manufacturers and creative entrepreneurs. The culture and tourism pillars will honour individuals and organisations promoting Uganda's heritage, arts, conservation and tourism potential.

The awards will also recognise excellence across agriculture, business and entrepreneurship, education, health, media, technology, manufacturing, environmental conservation, leadership, youth empowerment, women-led initiatives and community development.

According to the organisers, the initiative aligns with Uganda's Vision 2040 and the Fourth National Development Plan (NDP IV), which prioritise innovation, human capital development, private sector growth, value addition, wealth creation and job creation.

"Our vision is to build a platform that celebrates excellence while creating opportunities for talented Ugandans to grow, innovate and contribute to national transformation," said Damba Cinderella, president of the Nile Excellence Annual Awards.

The inaugural edition of the awards, held on December 28, 2025, at Rock Classic Hotel in Tororo, recognised 20 outstanding individuals and organisations from different sectors.

Building on that foundation, the 2026 edition has expanded from its roots in Eastern Uganda to adopt a national outlook, although organisers expect about 80 percent of nominations to come from Eastern Uganda and the remaining 20 percent from other regions.

Ahead of the official launch, the committee is implementing community initiatives, including the One Million Tree Project in Iganga District to promote environmental conservation and the Learner-to-Learner Training Programme, which equips students with skills in creativity, innovation and digital literacy.

The official launch of the second edition is scheduled for August 28, 2026, at Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

Projects selected through the nomination process will be considered for support under the Nile Excellence Innovation Fund, with financing expected to come from partnerships with government institutions, development partners, private sector organisations and other sponsors.
