A newspaper front page resembling Kenya's Standard newspaper and circulating widely on social media claims that a Kenyan court has barred opposition politician Fred Matiang'i from running for president and that he has fled the country to Dubai.
The front page, dated 9 July 2026, features the headline: "END OF THE ROAD."
"Matiang'is 2027 dream comes to an end as court rules he is ineligible to vie. The former Education CS has now fled to Dubai and is seeking assylum in friendly countries," its summary reads. It features an image of Matiang'i.

Matiang'i is a key political figure in Kenya's opposition who has said he will contest the 2027 presidential election. He previously served as a cabinet secretary under former president Uhuru Kenyatta, heading various ministries between 2013 and 2022, including the ministry of education.
He is among Kenyan opposition politicians seeking to unite in an effort to unseat president William Ruto in the 2027 general election. Ruto has declared his intention to seek re-election.
The front page has been posted widely. But can it be trusted? We checked.
Fake front page
Africa Check noted that the font used on the front page differs from that used on a genuine Standard newspaper. It also misspells the word "asylum". These are early signs that the front page is fabricated.
The Standard newspaper usually posts digital versions of its front pages on its verified social media accounts, including Facebook and X, as well as on its e-paper platform. We searched these accounts and the platform and found the authentic front page for 9 July, which differs from the version circulating on social media.
The genuine front page for that date featured the headline: "Untouchable cop." It reports on an incident in which a woman was allegedly pushed from an apartment by a police officer, leaving her paralysed.
On 9 July, the Standard newspaper posted a blurred version of the circulating front page on Facebook, with the word "FAKE" printed on it.
"FAKE NEWS ALERT: This is NOT a genuine cover of The Standard. Be cautious NOT to fall for propaganda and deep fakes. For GENUINE news updates, VERIFY from our accounts @StandardKenya and @KTNNewsKE," it cautioned.
The version doing the rounds on social media has been altered and there is no evidence for the claim made in the headline.
