Uganda: Alupo Hails Catholic Church's Role in Community Development

Vice President Jessica Alupo has commended the Catholic Church for its continued contribution to Uganda's social and moral development, describing it as a key partner in supporting government efforts to improve the welfare of citizens.

In a message delivered on her behalf by the state minister for Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, during the St. Charles Lwanga Day celebrations at St. Kalooli Catholic Church in Nabweru-Kibwa, Alupo said the Church has played a significant role in transforming communities through education, healthcare and other social services.

"The Church has greatly contributed to improving the lives of our people and continues to complement government efforts in delivering essential services," Alupo said in her message.

Kyofatogabye used the occasion to call on young people to embrace their responsibility of caring for the elderly, emphasizing the importance of respecting and supporting older members of society.

He also urged residents to maintain peace and reject violence during the forthcoming Local Council (LC) village chairperson elections.

"Young people should take responsibility for looking after the elderly, and all residents must avoid acts of violence during the village chairperson elections," Kyofatogabye said.

Delivering the homily, Monsignor John Baptist Ssebayiga, Parish Priest of St. Kizito Bwaise, encouraged Christians to pursue both physical and spiritual cleanliness.

"It is not enough to clean our homes and roads. We must also cleanse our hearts by turning away from sin and all forms of wrongdoing," Monsignor Ssebayiga said.

Meanwhile, Nansana Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Charles Lwanga commended the government and Minister Kyofatogabye for extending essential services to residents through programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), road infrastructure projects and the Emyooga initiative.

He said the government programmes are improving livelihoods and urged residents to take full advantage of the opportunities to increase household incomes.

The St. Charles Lwanga Day celebrations attracted hundreds of faithful who gathered to commemorate the Uganda Martyrs while reflecting on faith, service, peace and community development.
