Uganda: Kilimya LC I Candidate Withdraws to Promote Unity As Wangi Wins Chairmanship

Residents of Kilimya Village in Masaka City have elected a new Local Council I (LC I) chairperson following a peaceful election in which one candidate withdrew from the race to promote unity among voters.

The contest initially attracted four candidates -- Joseph Wangi, Umar Lubowa, Fred Nkonge and Wasswa Dodovico Kilangwa.

However, before voting started, Lubowa stepped down, saying his decision was aimed at preserving harmony and ensuring the community remained united.

"I have stepped down in the interest of the voters and the unity of our community. I believe peace and cooperation are more important than personal ambition," Lubowa said.

Voting proceeded peacefully, with Wangi emerging the winner and being declared the new LC I chairperson of Kilimya Village.

After his victory, Wangi thanked residents for entrusting him with leadership and pledged to serve all community members regardless of their political affiliations.

"I am grateful to the people of Kilimya for the confidence they have placed in me. I promise to serve everyone equally, promote unity among residents, and work closely with the community over the next five years to improve service delivery and development," he said.

Residents also elected members of the village executive committee who will work alongside Wangi during his five-year term.

The newly elected committee members pledged to cooperate with the chairperson to address community needs and support development initiatives.

Residents praised the peaceful conduct of the election, describing it as a demonstration of commitment to democratic leadership and peaceful coexistence.
