Old Mutual Insurance Uganda has donated a blended Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine and a radiant warmer to Kajjansi Health Centre IV through the Mama Toto Care Uganda programme, in a move aimed at strengthening maternal and newborn healthcare services in Uganda.
The donation is intended to bolster the health facility's capacity to provide specialised care for premature, low birth weight and critically ill newborns, while supporting national efforts to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.
The blended CPAP machine will provide carefully regulated oxygen and continuous airway pressure to premature and critically ill babies suffering from respiratory distress, while the radiant warmer will help newborns maintain a stable body temperature during treatment, reducing the risk of complications associated with hypothermia.
Health officials said the equipment will significantly enhance the facility's ability to deliver life-saving neonatal care.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Dr. Edrin Juuko, Head of Medical Business at Old Mutual Insurance Uganda, said the donation reflects the company's long-term commitment to strengthening Uganda's healthcare system and improving the wellbeing of families.
"The need for interventions like this has never been more urgent. According to the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) 2022, between 14 and 16 mothers and more than 60 newborns lose their lives every day in Uganda. Behind every one of those numbers is a family whose future is forever changed," Dr. Juuko said.
He noted that although Uganda has registered progress in improving maternal and newborn health, more investment is needed to ensure every mother survives childbirth and every newborn has the opportunity to thrive.

Speaking on behalf of Mama Toto Care Uganda, Past District Governor Xavier Sentamu said the programme remains focused on sustainable interventions that improve the quality of maternal and newborn healthcare across the country.
"Mama Toto Care Uganda is committed to reducing preventable maternal and newborn deaths by strengthening health facilities with the equipment, skills and systems they need to deliver quality care. Partnerships like this demonstrate what is possible when organisations unite behind a shared purpose of giving every mother and every newborn the best possible chance to survive," Sentamu said.

Mama Toto Care Uganda, a maternal and child health initiative led by The Rotary Foundation, works to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths by equipping health facilities with critical medical equipment, strengthening healthcare infrastructure and improving service delivery.
The handover ceremony at Kajjansi Health Centre IV was attended by representatives from Old Mutual Insurance Uganda, Rotary Uganda, Mama Toto Care Uganda and other stakeholders committed to improving maternal and newborn health.
The partners said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to investing in sustainable healthcare solutions that strengthen Uganda's health system, improve neonatal care and increase the survival chances of mothers and newborns.
