MTN Uganda contributed Shs15.32 trillion to Uganda's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and paid Shs1.6 trillion in taxes between 2022 and 2024, according to the company's latest Sustainability Report.

The report, launched on Tuesday, shows that beyond its direct financial contribution, the telecom company generated Shs34.9 trillion in shared value through its broader economic, social and environmental impact.

It highlights MTN Uganda's contribution to Uganda's digital transformation agenda, financial inclusion, environmental sustainability and community development.

Speaking at the launch, MTN Uganda Board Chairman Charles Mbire said the report demonstrates the company's commitment to corporate governance, transparency and creating long-term value for customers, shareholders and communities.

"Strong governance is the foundation of sustainable growth. Through enhanced oversight, transparent reporting and alignment with globally recognised sustainability standards, we continue to ensure that MTN Uganda creates long-term value for our shareholders, customers and the communities we serve," Mbire said.

The report is the company's first Sustainability Report aligned with the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) Sustainability Disclosure Standards, including IFRS S1 on General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information and IFRS S2 on Climate-related Disclosures.

To strengthen credibility, the report was independently assured by Ernst & Young (EY) under the International Standard on Assurance Engagement (ISAE 3000).

According to the findings, MTN Uganda remained a major contributor to the country's digital economy, connecting 24.2 million subscribers by the end of 2025 through continued investment in telecommunications infrastructure.

The company expanded its network to achieve 88.6 percent 4G population coverage and deployed 27,037 kilometres of fibre optic infrastructure, improving access to high-speed internet for individuals, businesses and public institutions across the country.

The report also highlights MTN Uganda's role in expanding financial inclusion through its fintech subsidiary, Mobile Money Uganda Limited.

During the reporting period, the platform facilitated transactions worth Shs195.5 trillion and supported 14.7 million active mobile money wallets, enabling millions of Ugandans to access digital financial services for payments, savings, trade and other economic activities.

MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer Sylvia Mulinge said sustainability is central to the company's long-term strategy and ambition of becoming a digitally unstoppable organisation.

"At MTN Uganda, we believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. Sustainability is not separate from our business strategy; it is embedded in how we innovate, invest and create meaningful impact," Mulinge said.

She added that through the company's Ambition 2030 strategy, MTN Uganda is working towards building a digitally inclusive future while addressing environmental and social priorities.

On climate action, the report indicates that MTN Uganda reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent compared to its 2021 baseline, putting the company on track towards its target of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

Beyond its commercial operations, MTN Uganda continued investing in community programmes through the MTN Foundation, which committed Shs5.1 billion towards initiatives in education, healthcare, digital inclusion and community development.

The launch was officiated by Uganda Securities Exchange Chief Executive Officer Paul Bwiso, who commended MTN Uganda for adopting internationally recognised sustainability reporting standards.

Bwiso said transparent reporting plays an important role in strengthening investor confidence and developing Uganda's capital markets.

"Companies that embrace robust sustainability reporting contribute to stronger capital markets and build trust among investors and stakeholders. Transparency, accountability and responsible business practices are critical pillars for sustainable economic growth," he said.

The report concludes that MTN Uganda's combined economic, social and environmental activities generated Shs34.9 trillion in shared value, showing that the company's impact extends beyond profits through investments in connectivity, digital financial services, climate action, employment, community development and corporate governance.

As Uganda continues to advance its digital transformation agenda, the report positions MTN Uganda as a key partner in expanding access to technology, promoting financial inclusion and supporting sustainable economic growth.
