Uganda: Suspected SPLA-Io Fighter Killed After Fatal Shooting in Koboko

The Uganda Police Force has intensified intelligence-led operations across the West Nile sub-region as part of efforts to curb crime and strengthen public security.

West Nile Regional Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia said police are investigating several shooting-related murder incidents reported in the region.

In one of the incidents, a man identified as Moses Acio, who police say was a suspected member of the South Sudan opposition group SPLA-IO, was killed during a security operation after allegedly shooting dead a woman at Lobule Refugee Settlement in Koboko District.

According to Angucia, police at Koboko Police Station coordinated with the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) after receiving information about the incident.

"The information was quickly relayed to Koboko Police Station, where the District Police Commander liaised with the UPDF. The suspect was intercepted along the Yumbe-Koboko Road, where he reportedly opened fire on the security team and was put out of action," Angucia said.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the suspect crossed into Uganda from South Sudan on Wednesday, August 5, and went to his father's home in Lobule Refugee Settlement, where the deceased, identified as Mariam Etitu, was living as a tenant.

Police allege that the suspect demanded shs10,000 from each tenant at the residence. When Etitu reportedly told him she did not have the money, he allegedly shot and killed her.

In a separate operation, police arrested three suspects accused of stealing cattle and attempting to sell the animals at the Arua City Abattoir. The arrests are part of ongoing efforts to dismantle livestock theft syndicates operating in the region.

Meanwhile, the Traffic Police Department at the West Nile Regional Police Headquarters in Arua City has intensified road safety enforcement operations aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations and restoring order on the region's roads.

Police say the enhanced security operations will continue as authorities work to combat violent crime, livestock theft and traffic-related offences across the West Nile sub-region.
