Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has urged local government leaders, including elected LC chairpersons, to immediately mobilise communities for the government's nationwide cleaning exercise scheduled for August 29.
Nabbanja said local leaders should begin preparations early by mobilising residents and ensuring that adequate equipment is available for the exercise.
"Local leaders must mobilise the people they lead in good time and ensure that the necessary equipment is available, including vehicles to collect the waste and suitable places where it can be disposed of," Nabbanja said.
The Prime Minister said proper planning would help address the growing problem of garbage accumulation, particularly in Kampala, where waste has continued to pile up in some areas because of inadequate collection.

The cleaning exercise will be conducted across the country, with the main Kampala event taking place at Kyaliwajjala UMEA Primary School in Kira Municipality.
Government launched a mandatory nationwide cleaning campaign on July 25, with the exercise attracting large numbers of Ugandans and lasting about three hours.
However, residents have continued to face challenges with uncollected waste in several communities, particularly in Kampala.
Nabbanja has therefore called on local leaders to ensure stronger participation in the second exercise and establish proper mechanisms for waste collection and disposal.
She also addressed members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, saying those who worship on Saturday would be able to attend church after the cleaning exercise, while encouraging them to participate in Sunday's activities.
"Those who worship on Saturday should be able to go to their churches after the cleaning is completed, but they have also been encouraged to participate in the cleaning exercise on Sunday," she said.
The Minister of State for Local Government, Justine Namere, called on politicians, particularly opposition leaders, to avoid politicising the exercise.
"Let us not bring politics into this exercise because when we do so, we are only undermining the development of our country," Namere said.
Other government ministers, led by the Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, also joined the call for Ugandans to participate in the cleaning exercise.

The main Kampala event will be held at Kyaliwajjala UMEA Primary School in Kira Municipality, where only designated vehicles will be allowed to operate on Ngudo Road during the event.
Government says the exercise is intended to reduce garbage accumulation and promote cleaner and healthier communities across the country.
