Several members of parliament have been criss-crossing the country in recent weeks as part of oversight programmes, including questioning town council leaders on how public funds are used.

It's good to see lawmakers being on the ground.

While grassroot visits are commendable, it's perhaps also the right time to ask if our parliamentary committees have enough teeth.

In January this year, parliamentarians accused senior leaders at Rundu Town Council of failing to pitch up for a meeting with lawmakers.

This week, the chief executive of the same town council was not able to respond to pertinent questions raised by the parliamentarians.

It is indicative of a persistent disrespect of lawmakers, as well as the people they are elected to serve, and needs to end.

There is a reason why town council officials, for instance, believe they can skip meetings without fear of repercussions.

It is high time oversight committees are empowered to take action against those who undermine or neglect their positions and responsibilities.

The impact of these visits will be measured by what happens afterwards.

If the outcome is the usual run-of-the-mill report with non-binding recommendations, lawmakers have only themselves to blame if processes are not enforced.

It will also result in these trips and travels, which cost taxpayers thousands of dollars, only being seen as a way to score cheap political points in the regions and to rake in more S&T.
