Botswana: Ramoreboli Joins Bafana Bafana

Gaborone — Just as the senior men's national football team, the Zebras, were beginning to adapt to Morena Ramoreboli's tactical philosophy, the South African strategist has vacated his post, leaving a void on the local football landscape.

Ramoreboli has been appointed the assistant coach for South Africa's Bafana Bafana, where he will serve under the newly appointed head coach, Pitso Mosimane.

The sudden departure comes at a critical juncture for local football and the Zebras as he left just weeks ahead of the Zebras crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification fixtures against Libya and Tunisia, scheduled for September 24 and 28, respectively.

Botswana Football Association (BFA) vice president, Tebogo Kamati, said the association was working around the clock to find a suitable replacement for Ramoreboli.

Kamati said BFA was treating the technical vacancy with utmost urgency, given the magnitude of the upcoming continental clashes and the nation's collective desire to see the Zebras excel.

"While the Zebras are expected to report for camp on Monday, we will announce an interim coach in earnest so that the squad can immediately start preparing for these two crucial encounters against Libya and Tunisia," he said

Following the announcement, the BFA and the South African Football Association (SAFA) issued a joint press release to clarify the transition.

In the communique, SAFA thanked BFA for their professional and cooperative handling of Ramoreboli's release.

Both football governing bodies used the platform to reaffirm their bilateral commitment to cementing cross border football relations and fostering regional football development.

The two associations highly commended Ramoreboli's indelible impact on Botswana football, saying his illustrious tenure in the country includes winning domestic titles with elite league side Jwaneng Galaxy, steering them through a historic CAF Champions League group stage campaign, and ultimately guiding the Zebras for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.

The BFA now faces a race against time to restore stability to the technical bench, by appointing a capable caretaker coach and keeping Botswana's 2027 AFCON dream alive.
