27 September 2026

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially commissioned the newly renovated Mount Elgon Hotel & Spa in Mbale City, hailing the restoration of the iconic landmark as a massive boost for tourism and the local economy in Eastern Uganda.

The President presided over the grand opening ceremony over the weekend, celebrating the successful preservation of the facility's rich history alongside the integration of modern, world-class luxury amenities.

Speaking during the launch, President Museveni emphasized that the hospitality industry remains a cornerstone of Uganda's service sector and a vital driver of national development.

The hospitality industry is an important part of the service sector, creating jobs, supporting businesses, and contributing to economic growth," the President remarked. He commended the developers for striking a delicate balance between retaining the architectural heritage of the landmark and upgrading it to serve the needs of contemporary travelers.

Originally constructed in the 1950s, the Mount Elgon Hotel & Spa has been part of Mbale's hospitality heritage for over seventy years. The extensive 2026 restoration program successfully renewed the building's structural frameworks, services, and room standards, while deliberately keeping its classic arcades, historical corridors, and sprawling garden settings intact.

Following the commissioning of the hotel, the President also visited the nearby Mbale Wildlife Education Centre. He noted that the center plays a critical role in showcasing Uganda's rich wildlife diversity and unlocking the massive, untapped tourism potential of the Elgon sub-region.

President Museveni stated that the government plans to replicate similar wildlife education centers in other sub-regions across the country to bring conservation closer to the public, particularly young Ugandans.

Local leaders and tourism stakeholders present at the event welcomed the development, noting that the return of the prominent facility strengthens Mbale City's capacity to host major conferences, create immediate employment for the youth, and accommodate the expanding numbers of domestic and international tourists exploring Eastern Uganda.
