Ugandan Women Break Into Taxi Industry As Drivers and Conductors

29 September 2026

Ugandan women are taking advantage of the right to work accorded by the President to venture into all kinds of jobs, including working as taxi conductors and drivers, a field previously dominated by men.

Speaking on Salam TV's Omukeeze program hosted by Aminah Nabukenya, Sandra Khasalamwa, the Chairperson of Female Taxi Drivers and Conductors Uganda, said there are now more than 60 female taxi drivers in the country, with more women currently learning how to drive.

Khasalamwa encouraged women not to be lazy but to embrace work, noting that it feels fulfilling to earn one's own income. "I have managed to take care of myself and my family," she said.

She however noted that female drivers and conductors face several challenges including carrying heavy luggage, stiff competition in the industry, and workplace relationships where male colleagues attempt to initiate romantic relationships, making their work difficult at times.

Khasalamwa urged women to step out of their comfort zones and embrace work, adding that as female taxi drivers and conductors, they are looking to recruit more women from all regions across the country to join the profession.
