Kenya: Safaricom Says M-Pesa Generated Sh478bn in Social Value

27 October 2026

Nairobi — Safaricom says M-PESA generated an estimated Sh478.1 billion in social value in the year to March 2026, as 57.8 percent of transactions on the mobile money platform were conducted without charges.

The figures are contained in the company's latest sustainability report, which estimates that Safaricom created a total of Sh1.25 trillion in value for Kenyan society during the period, a 10 percent increase from the previous year.

The report also shows that Safaricom's wider business ecosystem supported more than 1.4 million jobs, including those of M-PESA agents, suppliers and dealers.

The company connected 739,000 homes to fixed internet, while 8,200 households were on its Sh800 monthly internet package.

Safaricom and the M-PESA Foundation also reached 4.4 million people through programmes covering healthcare, education, water access and economic empowerment.

On its environmental targets, Safaricom said more than 2,000 network sites were powered by solar energy, up from 1,432 a year earlier.

However, people with disabilities accounted for 4 per cent of its workforce, below the company's 5 per cent target.

The report measures Safaricom's estimated social and environmental impact alongside risks such as climate change and cybersecurity.
