The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has arrived in the Ssese Islands to promote the Situla Omutindo initiative, which seeks to mobilise the Kabaka's subjects to improve their livelihoods, prevent diseases and preserve cultural heritage.
During the visit, the Katikkiro urged residents to embrace the Kabaka's directive to fight HIV/AIDS, with the goal of ending the epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
Upon arriving in Ssese, Mayiga visited a prominent tree locally known as the "Ssese tree", which is associated with the origin of the islands' name.
He also emphasised the importance of preserving Buganda's cultural heritage and passing its traditions on to future generations.
"It is important to preserve everything related to our traditions and culture as a valuable heritage, so that nothing is lost and everyone can understand its significance," he said.
Mayiga is visiting the islands accompanied by the Minister of Health, Choltilda Nakate; the Minister of Agriculture, Hajj Amis Kakomo; and the Chairperson of the Buganda Cultural and Development Foundation (BUCADEF) Board, Dr Ben Muyinza Ssekamatte.
The Situla Omutindo initiative seeks to encourage the Kabaka's subjects to improve their standards of living, take measures to prevent HIV/AIDS and other diseases, and safeguard Buganda's cultural heritage.
