Uganda: 17-Year-Old Student Dies After Mityana-Mubende Road Crash

5 November 2026

A 17-year-old student of Naama Secondary School has died following a road crash involving a motorcycle and an Isuzu Elf at Wabiruku Swamp along the old Mityana-Mubende Road, with police searching for the vehicle's driver who reportedly fled the scene.

Jamada Mugerwa, a resident of Katakala Cell in Mityana Municipality, died on Thursday, November 5, a day after sustaining serious injuries in the crash.

According to Wamala Region Police Spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, the accident occurred at about 7:30pm on Wednesday, November 4, as Mugerwa rode a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UMA 732F, from school towards his home.

Kigozi said the motorcycle collided head-on with an oncoming blue Isuzu Elf, registration number UBQ 807V, as the two vehicles approached a bend near Wabiruku Swamp. The truck was travelling from Mityana towards Mubende.

Preliminary information indicates that the Isuzu Elf had defective headlights, affecting visibility at the time of the collision.

Mugerwa and his passenger, a fellow Naama Secondary School student identified only as Angel, sustained serious injuries.

"Our traffic officers, led by Head Constable Major Wathum Abubaker, visited the scene, documented the accident and prepared a sketch plan to support investigations," Kigozi said.

The two victims were rushed to Mityana General Hospital for treatment, while the wreckage of the motorcycle and the Isuzu Elf was towed to the Mityana Traffic Police parking yard for further examination.

Mugerwa, however, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, prompting police to reclassify the case from a serious road crash to a fatal accident.

Police said the driver of the Isuzu Elf fled the scene after the collision and remains at large. Kigozi said efforts were underway to trace and arrest the driver to assist with investigations.

"We appeal to anyone with information that could help identify the driver or establish his whereabouts to cooperate with the police as investigations continue," he said.

Police extended condolences to Mugerwa's parents, relatives, fellow students, teachers and friends as investigations into the crash continue.
