Tension Over Kenya's New Mega Port at Lamu

The construction of Lamu Port in Kenya has been officially launched by Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki, South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and Ethiopia's Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

The port is expected to act as the main gateway to Africa's Great Lakes region that includes the Horn of Africa, eastern Africa and central Africa.

But there have been mixed reactions to the project, with some saying the effects on fishing and the environment, and compensation for those who will be displaced were not taken into account.

The quiet port of Lamu faces a huge transition as it becomes the coastal terminus of one of Africa biggest infrastructure projects.

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the project, saying the port will have multiple benefits.
