'Paradigm Shift' Raises Prospects for Congo Peace

Unprecedented international commitment to and partnership with Africa has boosted peace prospects in the the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes region. That's the view of Russ Feingold, a former U.S. Senator who serves currently as special envoy for that conflict-ridden region. A key element of that push was the establishment of the intervention brigade within the UN peacekeeping mission in the DRC and the negotiation of the Peace, Security, and Cooperation Framework, signed by 13 African countries.

Government police arrive at Goma as UN peacekeepers watch in December 2012 after the M23 withdrew from the town in eastern DRC. The UN changed its mandate from peacekeeping force to an intervention force starting early May 2014.
