Bold Commitments at UN Climate Summit

More than 120 heads of state and government joined business and civil society leaders for the 2014 UN Climate Summit that aims to mobilize political will for a meaningful legal agreement on climate change in 2015 and deliver concrete new commitments.

Over 3 billion people across the globe rely on wood, animal dung, and crop waste to cook food and heat their homes. The emissions produced from burning these substances leads to carbon emission levels hazardous to the environment and human health. In fact, dangerous smoke exposure from these cooking methods results in 2 million premature deaths per year.

Girls in Ghana are taking climate action with the help of United Nations Development Programme - UNDP through the Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative. This programme trains girls to have jobs, increases their economic empowerment, utilizes local resources and reduces carbon emissions by encouraging bike travel.

More than 15 African Carbon Assessment Development projects across the continent will collectively save 5 million tons of CO2 emissions over 20 years. Projects include retailing kerosene-replacing lamps in Rwanda, a programme on energy efficient clay brick production in South Africa, and a green charcoal project developed by local entrepreneurs in Mali.
