Today South Africa commemorates the 38th anniversary of the student uprising of June 16, 1976. The student-led protests in Soweto - known as the Soweto Uprising - claimed about 23 lives in Soweto alone on the day of the march. The protests began in Soweto schools and spread across the country. The unrest was a response to the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction. The SABC spoke to some of the students of the class of 1976 who were at the forefront of the students' march.
